This lookout tower marks the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains (summit of Clingmans Dome, 6643 feet). It's only a half mile hike from the parking lot, but it ascends 330 feet in that distance. The steep ascent combined with the thinner air and heat make it quite strenuous, especially for out of shape folks like us.
